United Way of Saginaw County

Opening doors of hope for more than 90 years!

United Way History:

The birthplace of the United Way movement is recognized as Denver, Colorado, when in 1909 religious leaders joined together to organize United Charities to provide for the poor widows and orphans. The Saginaw Welfare League organized October 14, 1919, to consolidate the financial support of the various charitable institutions of the city. Arthur Eddy served as the first Chairman of the Board and John W. Johnson was the first Executive Director. United Way of Saginaw County is proud to be celebrating its 89th anniversary. To learn more of the history of your local United Way visit the display at the Castle Museum.

United Way is a volunteer-directed nonprofit organization operated by trained staff that promotes volunteerism, raises funds to address important health and human service issues, and insures the money donated is used in the most efficient and effective manner possible. United Way volunteers research the needs of our community, informs the community of those needs, and makes sure United Way dollars are distributed to programs that best address those issues.

United Way of Saginaw County’s mission:
